Reiki therapy involves the channeling of positive energy to aid healing, whether it may be physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual.  It helps to restore the correct energy balance throughout the body and can be beneficial to both humans and animals.

What to expect during a Reiki session?


Before starting any treatment I like to collect as much information as possible about the horse. This involves completing a brief questionnaire, which can be done via the telephone prior to my visit, or during the initial concultation. I will also need to seek permission from the horses Vet. This is simply a phone call to make sure that the Vet is happy for the horse to receive Reiki. The owner/yard manager will then need to sign a treatment consent form when I attend.

During my visit, I prefer the owner/yard manager to be present and ask that they horse is tied either outside the stable or inside with access to a haynet. It is helpful if there is minimal activity on the yard.

I will firstly 'introduce' myself to the horse for several minutes before starting the Reiki session. The session will take up to one hour but this may be shorter depending on the horse's willingness to accept treatment. Occasionally, a horse may not be ready or willing to accept healing and therefore I will always respect this and cease the treatment.


What will the horse do during a Reiki session?

 

The horse may exhibit one or more of the following

  • Stretching
  • Lowering of the head
  • Relaxed posture/standing still
  • Licking/chewing
  • Yawning
  • Sighing
  • Dropped bottom lip
  • Eyes closed or droopy
  • Wanting to lie down

 

 

 

What happens after a session?


Each horse is different and therefore post-therapy treatment should be judged according to the individual horse but as a guide, following a session the horse should be allowed some time to rest. They should have access to water and may drink a little more than normal. It is helpful if the owner can record any changes in behaviour following treatment and prior to the next session. In general it is normal to have a course of four sessions, but some horses will need more or less than this.
